Baroness of Brunwick Street making a lot of noise ... as ususal
RUMOUR has it that the Baroness of Brunswick Street,
Jai Ogilvie, has helped turn the Brunswick Hotel into a happening thang,
with live music three times a week.
Every Sunday in the corner bar from 6pm is some
outfit called Homespun, a six-piece band which is promoted
as an eclectic mix of jazz, acid jazz, funk, rock, reggae and soul. How's
that for casting a wide net to suit almost all tastes.
On Tuesdays, The Locals Blues and Jam Night seees a three or four piece
(can't they make up their minds?) who've played around Brissie haunts for
years. Never heard of them! Still, it's touted as a great jam session. It
kicks off at 8pm.
Then on Thursday nights is the Julie James Jazz Band. Luckily for the band,
its singer (pictured) is also called Julie James, so they didn't have to
change their name. Julie's jazz set kicks off at 8pm.
While PubCrawl was in the Brunnie, we had a peek at the cartoon artwork of Jai's sister, Kylie, and liked what we saw. Here's some of her works. Kylie is heading to Sydney to try to make a name for herself in the crazy world of cartooning - with meaning! Pubcrawl wishes her well.

FREE! Irish music festival
The third annual Brisbane Irish Music Festival takes
place at the Waterloo Hotel, Fortitude Valley, on Saturday, June 12.
What's more, entry is FREE! Now, that's our
sort of gig!
Bands include Sunas, The Poachers, Rough Red, Malarky and Potcheen. Soloists
include Michael Nolan, Glen Donald and Lonnie Martin. There's also a duo
by the name of Simon and Mink. The music kicks off at 3.30pm and a two-stage
format will keep the tin whistles a twitterin' til midnight, says promoter
Rob Hudson.
For rah-rah nuts, the Australian-Ireland Test will be broadcast on the big
screen on the day!
Handy work
The Jubilee's Chris Handy is boasting to have shed quite a few kilos over recent months. PubCrawl will have to take his word for it: would sandpapering a jumbo jet make it look any smaller?
