A dream realised:
The multi-million-dollar revamp of the Sydney Opera House
reached completion yesterday when the building set sail for the
first time, in accordance with the original design intent of its
controversial Danish architect Jorn Utzon.
Mr Utzon, now almost 90, was sacked by the NSW government in 1966
following construction delays and disagreements about the Opera
House's final design.
The Carr government has spent several million dollars refurbishing
the building in line with Utzon's original design principles including
the use of workable roof sails.
Mr Utzon was reportedly too frail to travel to Australia to see
yesterday's event for himself.
