Tsunami briefs:
Bush looks for answers
WASHINGTON: Weeks after the tsunami, US president George
W Bush says the extent of the tragedy is "still beyond my
compredemption".
Speaking to The Bug moments after his inaugafacation for
his second four-year term, Mr Bush said: "I still don't understand
how so many innocent people could have been killed so quickly
using only natural means."
He added that a "please explain" had been sent to Pentagon
chiefs.
Figures far from right
SYDNEY: The death toll from the Boxing Day tsunami
is being highly overstated by politicians and aid organisations
"for their own selfish purposes and agendas", according
to the head of the respected Andrew Bolt Centre for Thinking Right.
SA reports false alarm
ADELAIDE: Emergency services in South Australia were
put on high alert for several hours yesterday following the receipt
of what turned out to be a bogus tsunami warning.
A government spokesperson said the alert was sparked by measuring
devices being monitored by the University of Adelaide at beaches
on Kangaroo Island off the SA coast as part of an oceanography
research project.
The spokesperson said scientists conducting the research determined
it was a false alarm once they realised federal Minister for Immigration,
Senator Amanda Vanstone, was holidaying on the island.
Rebuilding bill adds up
BRISBANE: The Queensland Government has offered to
fund the complete rebuilding of the devastated Aceh province of
Indonesia, despite World Bank claims that the task might cost
at least $5 billion.
Premier Peter Beattie promised that Queensland taxpayers would
not be out of pocket because of the state's magnanimous gesture.
"I've scrapped the remaining TV and press ads for the Energex
summer storm warning and tree-planting campaigns," Mr Beattie
said. "That should just about cover it."
