Harry adjusted his swigvot and marched determinedly across the ancient stones leading to the vardmain of Albus Bumblebore.
He made such swift progress across the smooth transgress that he hardly heard the murmurings of hesitant disapproval from his minor and under-underling Kevin Weasley, nor the whine of the rabbitty Rita Skeeter who had begged to come along.
"We've got to alert Bumblebore as to what grand chuzap Alastor Moody has said as fact," Harry said almost under his breath. But to tell the truth, he cared no more or less whether the other two heard him. They would always have to be led, and he was tired of leading them.
Harry propped before the huge oak door as the others shunted up in their turn. For the briefest of wandwafts, he pondered why he felt nervous about confronting Bumblebore who, after all, owed him everything.
"I want to go home and be the fill-in host for some TV star on leave," whimpered Skeeter.
"I wish I'd never left the dipocracy," bemoaned Weasley.
"Susshhh," commanded Harry, who just the previous night had polled a number of people about exactly this moment and who, in the slimmest of majorities, had come up with "susshhh" as the most sensible response to such a scenario.
He rapped urgently on the huge doors, only to hear Bumblebore's whispered reply: "Go away, I'm not interested. Never have been, really."
Harry allowed the vanest wift of a smirk to settle across his handsome features, because Bumblebore's response was exactly as he had expected. But he knew how to get around the great man's famed self-mockery and false modesty.
As the others clustered around him, Harry whispered, knowing Bumblebore was close by on the other side of the door.
"We can take Draco Malfoy this time," he said softly. "We've just been in counsel with Alastor, and he is adament victory will soon be yours."
Harry was just about to utter some other equally brilliant and persuasive words when he heard the giant bronze key being turned on the other side. He smile-smirked as he felt the giant wooden cross-slot slip free from its serrated mancheon. He pushed the door ajar, but saw only the wizard's broad back as Bumblebore moved with amazing speed for such a big man back to his cluttered desk.
"I'm busy starching some smouts for display," said Bumblebore, "and although I have no desire to do battle with Draco again, I'll hear you out as a matter of courtesy."
Weasley opened his mouth to speak, but the words dried on his tongue under the withering stare of Harry, who allowed the faintest of self-satisfied smiles to spread across the handsome lips of his equally handsome face before he spoke.
"You know as well as I do, Bumblebore," Harry began quietly, "that Alastor has the largest and most powerful wand in the land.
"I don't know," butted in Rita, "It's not bad but it's never made me blanche. I've certainly seen bigger."
"In winter?" Harry sneered, and Rita, knowing she was beaten, retreated behind Weasley. Harry knew she wouldn't dare open her mouth again until they were back in his rooms.
"Alastor used his wand to summon forth the sirens of the future and the news is all good - but only if we move quickly," Harry said seductively. Bumblebore pushed his bunsen burner aside, closed his smout book and shook his head slowly.
"But I keep telling you, I really don't mind Draco at all. What he says and does is really no different to everything I have said or done in the past."
Harry raised his hand to stop the big man in his tracks and then delivered what he knew would be the coup de grace.
"All that what you say is true, Bumblebore," Harry said, "but Alastor's wand tells us also that Draco is close to perfecting a magic potion that will fix up his mouth and make him much-loved across the entire wizardomitory.
"His teeth too?" asked Bumblebore, who had turned decidedly white.
Harry nodded.
"He'll be unbeatable," hissed Bumblebore, blowing out the flame. "What do we need to do?"
In the suddenly darkened room, Harry hoped that others had not been alert enough to see the self-satisfied smirk that had momentarily and very understandably settled across his handsome face. He really must work on controlling that more.
