Revamp plans for stadium
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie (far right
and also pictured) has announced a $400 million revamp of
the recently completed Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Mr Beattie yesterday unveiled plans to reconfigure the stadium's
rectangular playing field into an oval suitable for Australian
rules.
"I acknowledge the fact that we have just spent close to
$300 million building Suncorp Stadium as a world-class rugby league
arena," Mr Beattie said.
"But it makes sense to convert it to an AFL ground.
"This is a smart move that epitomises our Smart State policies,"
he said.
Mr Beattie denied the decision was sparked by the growing popularity
of three-times AFL premiers the Brisbane Lions and the failure
of the Brisbane Broncos to reach the NRL grand final this year.
When told by reporters that the Lions already had a multi-million-dollar
AFL ground at Woolloongabba, Mr Beattie announced plans to build
a pedestrian footbridge across the Brisbane River to link the
two stadiums.
New TV show on the way
An Australian television network is working
on several top secret local spin-offs of the American makeover
program Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.
It's understood the Ten Network is developing the program, Straight
Eye for the Queer Guy featuring five heterosexual men who change
the look and lifestyle of a gay man.
The network already screens the original US version of the show.
A Ten spokesperson said a pilot episode of the new spin-off show
had already been shot in Sydney.
"In it we used five big, boofy footballers and one weedy
little gay guy," the spokesperson said.
"It turned out to be a great idea. The footy players invited
the gay guy into their post-match communal bath.
"They then took him out for a few drinks and got so plastered
they all got very touchy-feely and confessed their love for one
another."
Premier resting after mishap
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie was resting comfortably at his Wilson home last night after spraining an ankle rushing to get in front of a camera.
Show cancelled without hesitation
